This person plays a vital role in ensuring smooth, efficient operations and striving for operational excellence. He or she will be part of the team leading and directing a maintenance team in a fast-paced environment to ensure that all equipment is operational and running to deliver product for sales’ needs. He or she will be responsible for ensuring short- and long-term strategies around preventive, reactive and running maintenance programs. He or she will collaborate positively with production, sanitation, quality, continuous improvement and other stakeholders to ensure operational success for the plant and minimized downtime. This leader will ensure team members embrace a positive, collaborative environment throughout the facility to meet production goals. There is a preference for commercial baking or food manufacturing experience, but it is not required.
In addition to the technical aspects of the position, he or she will be responsible for leading, coaching, training and developing a high-performance maintenance team. He or she will hold supervisors and employees accountable in all aspects of their roles including maintenance, positive culture, safety, quality, operational and financial metrics.
Your Day-to-Day Essential Responsibilities

- Establish, maintain, and set expectations for a clean, safe work environment in compliance with Company, Industry and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
- Lead and manage a team of maintenance technicians. Ensure proper staffing levels, assign tasks, provide guidance, ensure that all team members are well-trained and adhere to safety standards and company protocol. Promote safety and ethical standards.
- Address and mediate conflicts or issues that arise among team members, fostering a cooperative team dynamic.
- Conduct and manage routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and quick responses to equipment failure. Lead the Maintenance function in providing both a reactive and pro-active, multi-skilled maintenance service on all operational equipment and facilities infrastructure.
- Increase plant operational effectiveness, improve on project delivery, mean time between failure and downtime reduction, and manage and implement maintenance improvement plans, driving Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
- Guide the team effectively to address issues related to manufacturing equipment – conveyors, proof boxes, ovens, mixers, etc. and assist as needed in these repairs.
- Report and take necessary action to prevent food safety, product quality or other legal matters.
- Optimize equipment according to OEM standard procedure, enhancing performance and product quality.
- Ensure good housekeeping throughout the plant, maintenance shop and parts room at all times.
- Analyze maintenance processes and work to improve efficiency and effectiveness, through the implementation of new technologies or methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, Predictive Maintenance, root cause analysis, risk assessment/mitigation and proactive problem resolution.
- Ensure the maintenance budget is met.
- Ensure that necessary spare parts and inventory items are available and properly organized to support maintenance and repair activities efficiently.
- Ensure and maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, equipment performance, and any relevant data to help inform decision-making and continuous improvement efforts at required times.
- Identify training needs for the maintenance team and ensure execution to enhance team skills and capabilities.
- Assist with managing employee vacation, time and attendance matters.
- Follow and enforce programs and procedures as defined by the Company’s, our customers, or other external partner’s food safety requirements.
What We’re Looking For
This role requires an excellent leader with strong critical thinking, analytical skills, judgement, quantitative reasoning and decision-making.
- Bachelor's degree in production engineering, product engineering, manufacturing engineering.
- Five years of leadership experience in the food industry within industrial/manufacturing processes and equipment repair. Ability to lead, train and assist maintenance mechanics at all levels of experience.
- Excellent communication skills via participation in various meetings, production of reports and presentations.
- Knowledge of various software platforms such as MaintainX, Microsoft Office, etc.;
- Proficiency in troubleshooting, problem solving and repairing machinery, understanding of automation systems, and familiarity with maintenance management software.
- Proficiency in hydraulics, pneumatics, refrigeration, electronic control panels, PLC and electrical systems is essential.
- Ability to analyze complex technical problems, develop solutions, and implement changes effectively.
- Comprehensive understanding of safety regulations and practices related to maintenance and manufacturing.
- Skills in managing projects, timelines, and resources effectively, often required in maintenance and engineering roles.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, clients, customers, vendors, and the general public.
- Ability to lead department in the absence of the Maintenance Manager.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, hazardous places; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. This is a physically demanding position requiring strength, stamina, flexibility, coordination, balance, endurance, mobility and visual acuity.
The position works a five day schedule and may at times work additional days if there are equipment issues. Due to the nature of the position, availability around the clock may be needed.
